Florida Surgeon General Moves to Remove School Vaccine Mandates, Compares Mandates to Slavery

But there is still hope to fight this atrocious political stunt

Florida’s Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, with the full backing of Governor Ron DeSantis, announced this week that the state will eliminate all vaccine mandates including those required for children to attend school. In defending this decision, Ladapo went so far as to liken vaccine mandates to slavery. Let that sink in: a top public health official comparing the requirement to protect children from measles, rubella, polio, chickenpox and more to one of the greatest atrocities in human history.

This is not a slip of the tongue. It’s a calculated move in the ongoing politicization of public health, where evidence, history, and responsibility are traded for applause lines and culture-war soundbites. The reality is that vaccines are not shackles, they are shields. Vaccines have eradicated smallpox, nearly eliminated polio in most of the world, and saved millions of lives annually. To suggest otherwise isn’t just irresponsible; it’s dangerous.

Stripping away vaccine mandates doesn’t create freedom. It creates vulnerability, especially for people who rely on herd immunity for protection, such as those who are too young or medically unable to be vaccinated. The freedom Ladapo and DeSantis are championing is the “freedom” of a virus to spread unchecked through classrooms and communities. Now is not the moment to throw up our hands. Fighting back means refusing to let bad policy masquerade as freedom. This policy has to be legislated first.
