You have a good plan, but I fear this plan cannot be put into effect until our political system changes and we have a society with less inequality, more stability, and more respect for truth, including science. We aren’t going in that direction now, and I’m afraid the next medical emergency will come before Americans get our act together. I wish I could be more optimistic.
Makes one wonder - where the hell is Dr. Oz right now? Is he shaking in a corner somewhere afraid he will lose his job … or afraid of the mitochondrial disturbed RFK? I’ve seen him standing in the background during some of RFK’s media rants, and Oz is like a bobble head … nodding away. Ha!!! And here he is supposed to be a real doctor who once took the Hypocratic Oath, which contains words that are central to its principles … that Doctors should not cause unnecessary harm to patients. Well I have news for you Oz, you are causing harm!!You aren’t doing a damn thing to fight for the health of the people of the United States. You should be banned from medicine forever!!! Shame on a doctor not taking a stand to help people!!
I agree "...shifting guidelines and muddled messaging undermined public trust." I would just add that our country's failure to support our public health infrastructure predated that. On February 3, 2020, I posted a WaPo article with the headline "Nearly 700 vacancies at CDC because of Trump administration's hiring freeze" saying this is the part of Coronavirus to worry about. Our stockpile of masks had been depleted and not restocked under Obama, which was years before. We just haven't valued public health the way we've needed. We see that in vaccine hesitancy, as well. We are in such deep trouble...
When I did my student teaching, I discovered that, while I liked teaching HS science, teaching health was my passion. Several years later with MPH in hand, I thought I'd get a job in community health. Alas, the starting salary in the mid 1990s for a health educator (with MPH) at the Los Angeles Public Health Department was $28,000. Starting salary for a teacher (with BA) at Los Angeles Unified School District was $49,000 with much better benefits. As a society public health has almost always been overlooked and undervalued—except during health emergencies.
Yes to all of this. The CDC needs to be completely independent so politics can’t take the place of sound scientific reasoning. Also, having its own media wing will help with education. I have tried to read some of the studies that Kennedy says mean one thing but actually mean the opposite. I am not saying dumb it down, but maybe translate it into less technical terminology. Also explain the numbers for some of these studies! For those who want to be informed, explaining the numbers is such an easy way to eliminate the ability for someone like Kennedy to use it for misinformation!
